High vs. Low temperature: the secret of colour at Kinara
In the world of ceramics, temperature is not just a figure on the kiln; it is an artistic choice that determines the final character of each piece. Although high temperature is often talked about for its industrial hardness, at Kinara we work with low temperature for one fundamental reason: it is the only setting where colour reaches a purity impossible to achieve at 1300°C.
What really happens inside the kiln?
To understand the value of a piece, you have to understand how the material reacts to fire:
- High Temperature (Stoneware/Porcelain): Fired between 1200°C and 1300°C. At this level, the clay vitrifies completely, which makes it very resistant and suitable for industrial dishwashers. However, extreme heat is "aggressive" with pigments: many colours burn, evaporate or turn into greyish, muted tones.
- Low Temperature (Earthenware/Signature ceramics): Fired at around 1000°C. It is a more delicate process that respects the chemical composition of the colours. By not subjecting the pigment to extreme thermal stress, we achieve a much richer, deeper colour palette that stays true to the original design.
The intensity of the pigment and the vividness of the stroke
At Kinara, our technique of hand-painting, layer by layer, demands that blue be blue and that detail is not lost in the melting of the glaze. Low temperature allows us to keep the definition of every bird, flower or motif, achieving clean contrasts that at high temperature would become blurred or diffuse.
